It is that time of year again. A time for friends and family; a time for giving thanks and showing appreciation to all those you love. It is also a time of reflection: another year has come and gone. It is always important to reflect on your past and plan out your future ambitions. The beginning of the new year is always a great time for doing just that, for laying out some goals personal or professional. However, research has shown that only 8% of people who make New Year’s Resolutions actually accomplish them. At Stand-By Personnel, we want to help you accomplish your goals in 2020. Here are a few ways to jumpstart your resolutions!

Write your goals down now

Write your goals down. Write them down now. Both of those are critical to accomplishing your goals. You probably have ideas fluttering in and out of your head on a daily basis, some great and some not so great. Take the time to flesh those out and find the best ones for you. Writing them down is the first step to accomplishing a goal. Secondly, we urge you to write them down now. Do not wait until New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. You may be busy with family, friends or other festivities. Write them down now and put them in a place where you will see them. Your bedroom, kitchen, car or phone are great places. Take some time to think about them over the last couple of weeks of 2019 and refine them if need be. Then, come 2020, you will be ready to take action.

Create a plan

Writing down your goals is a great first step. After that, you should create an actionable plan around each. For instance, common goals include read more books, get in shape, eat healthier, find a new job. While these are great goals, they might be too broad and leave you wondering where to begin. Create actionable steps that you can start now or can begin immediately in 2020. Start buying books and leaving them by your bedside, purchase a gym membership now and start laying your gym clothes out the day before, throw away all the junk food in your house and buy some fresh greens, start researching jobs and building your skillset. These are more actionable steps that can help you reach your ultimate goals.

You have probably heard the saying: ‘A goal without a plan is just a wish.’

Do not make wishes. Add some actionable steps behind each goal to keep things operating smoothly.

Start now

Got your goals and action steps in place now? Why wait until 2020 to begin? Start working towards your goals in the last few days of 2019. This will make it easier to stay motivated come 2020.

Find a source of motivation

This one may be the toughest to follow. It is not a secret that most people fail on their New Year’s Resolution. As we noted above, only 8% of those who make plans actually succeed with them. Most of those others simply lose motivation and fall back into their old habits. Making a change is not easy. Most of the things you do on a daily basis are built out of habit. You may consciously want to make a change but habits are strong. You need to find a source of motivation to keep you going through the tough times. That motivation might come from within, it might come from a friend or a family member. It may come from someone else you look up to. Whatever it is, you need something to keep you on the right path. New habits are not built overnight. They take patience, often months of patience. Make sure you are prepared for the long haul.

Be Patient

With that said, be patient; don’t expect it to be easy. Also, don’t expect to see results immediately. Results are going to take time. If you are trying to get into fitness, expect muscle and fat loss to take a few months to appear. If you are looking for a new job, do not get discouraged if you are not hearing back within the first couple of months. All goals are going to take time to succeed with. Do not lose hope after a few days or even a few weeks. Prepare for months of hard work.

Track your goals

Even if you do not feel that you are seeing results, track your progress. Keep a journal or stat tracker for your daily progress. Note some results but also note how you feel. You may feel uncomfortable, challenged at times, but keeping track of your progress will help you stay focused on the bigger picture.
